Tel Abyad, Syria− Renewed clashes took place between the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) −military wing of the Democratic Union Party (PYD)− and members of the Qaeda affiliateed fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on Saturday near Tel Abyad city, north Syria.

A number of villages in western Tel Abyad −including Birkino, Koperlik, Abdikoy and Mallouh Qamar− saw sporadic clashes between the YPG and ISIL fighters over the last two days, local sources reported to ARA News

Tel Abyad’s western villages −where Kurds constitute a majority− have been controlled by the YPG since months after conflict with Islamist groups. However, the recent control of the al-Qaeda-linked ISIL over the city of Tel Abyad weakened the YPG’s fist over the area as the former tries to broaden area of domination through including the YPG-held surrounding villages.

Villagers of Kitkaniya and Fayonta −where Kurdish YPG forces installed barriers− said that the ISIL targeted residential buildings with mortar shells on Thursday, resulting in clashes between them and the YPG.

A resident in the area, conditioned to stay anonymous, told ARA News that only two shells of those five shells exploded in the vicinity of villages without causing damage.

“Fiver mortar shells have been fired by the ISIL resulting in damage of several residential buildings, but no casualties were reported,” a local source reported.

In Birkino, Koperlik, Abdikoy and Mallouh Qamar, the clashes broke out as the members of the ISIL were trying to break into the villages and launch an attack against strongholds of the YPG. However, the YPG could force the ISIL to withdraw from the area on Saturday evening, according to locals.

The Kurdish YPG forces and the group of ISIL are in a conflict for control over areas in northern Syria. The ISIL have dominated Tel Abyad city, in Raqqa province, nearly two months ago, and sporadic clashes between ISIL fighters and Syria rebels took place before the al-Qaeda affiliated ISIL impose its fist on the city.
