DAMASCUS – Syria’s information minister Omran al-Zoubi said Europe should bear full responsibility for the flood of Syrian refugees streaming into the continent “because of its past policies in backing those fighting to overthrow the government in Damascus”.

On Thursday, al-Zoubi said in a rare comment from Damascus that the migrants are mostly fleeing from areas held by rebel groups and Islamists, including the Islamic State (ISIS).

“European countries, which sent terrorists to Syria and imposed economic sanctions on the Syrian people, must take responsibility for their anti-Syria policies,” state media quoted al-Zoubi as saying.

The minister added that the Syrian government hasn’t forced anyone to leave the country.

“Any Syrian abroad can return to his country anytime he wants.”

This comes as Syrian regime forces continued their military campaign against residential neighborhoods in Aleppo and Damascus, using barrel bombs and other heavy weapons.

More than 250,000 people have been killed since the outbreak of the ongoing war in Syria four years ago.
